The E4OD was updated in 1998 and this new transmission was the last rendition of the C6. It was largely the same as the E4OD, but with some changes to internal components to address durability concerns when put behind the ever increasingly powerful Powerstroke Diesel Engine. E4OD E4OD The Ford E4OD was introduced in 1989 and used in both light and heavy duty applications. The E40D has four forward speeds and electronic shift controls replacing the hydraulic governor control mechanism of the C6. OD = Over Drive Introduced in 1989, the E4OD was Ford's first electronically controlled transmission. Based on core components of the C6, this transmission was used in many light and heavy duty vehicles including the Bronco, F-150, F-250, and F-350.

The Quick 2 is a simple, inexpensive, and easy-to-use controller based on the Quick 4's REVolution architecture. It's designed for hobbyists and shops who need simple and straightforward transmission control with a proven, robust, and reliable platform. It enables the use of modern, electronic four-speed transmissions on a wide variety of vehicles that lack the OEM capability, such as classic cars, trucks, or motorhomes. It can also be used to enhance a modern vehicle's performance by taking over control from the OEM computer, allowing the user to directly adjust shift points, firmness, torque convter engangement, and much more.

Featuring...

  • Graphical user interface enables easy adjustment to most settings without the need to connect a PC

  • Redisigned PCB from the ground up

  • Simplified setup allows you to install and drive immediately

  • Shift quality improvements result in consistent, excellent, OEM-quality shift feel

  • Compatible with aftermarket torque converters.

Gen2: A New Shift in Design

Introducing the all-new Gen2 Quick 2 transmission controller from US Shift. When we set out to redesign the Quick lineup, we didn't just want to give it a simple iterative refresh. We went back to the drawing board for a complete overhaul and the resulting new design has improved each controller's functionality, ease of use, power efficiency, diagnostic abilities, and more.

Display

The new feature that stands out the most on the Gen2 is our new OLED user interface display. It lights up bright enough to be seen in daylight and retains excellent contrast. The OLED display also features a wide viewing angle, making it ideal for mounting below or to the side of the driver position without suffering wash-out. It has a much wider temperature range than standard LCD displays, meaning it will continue to function whether you're over-landing in the sweltering heat of Moab or the frigid tundras of Alaska.

User Interface

Using the Gen2's new UI is a breeze. The home screen gives you real-time info on things like PRNDL position, currently-commanded gear, speed, configuration table in use, and any fault codes that may appear. To access the main menu, simply turn the knob and it will immediately appear. All of the menus and functions have been carefully crafted to be easily understood and adjusted. Most of the adjustments that can be made using a computer with our Shiftware software can also be done from the built-in user interface. Examples include adjusting shift timing, shift firmness, torque converter clutch engagement, switching calibration tables, and adjusting the speed sensor settings, just to name a few.

Diagnostics

The Gen2 features comprehensive diagnostic tools. Each individual solenoid output is precisely monitored and error messages are more specific, taking you directly to the problem. And advanced diagnostics data can be accessed directly through the UI's menu instead of having to connect the controller to a PC. These improvements makes installation and troubleshooting easier than ever before.

Design

The newly redesigned Gen2 controllers feature a new circuit board which is more power efficient and runs cooler thanks to advanced thermal management, improving reliability. Additional protection circuitry prevents controller damage which could be caused by accidental mis-wiring. We've also added a robust, high-temperature-rated EEPROM IC with error correction for storing critical data - such as tunes, settings, and learned data - which has been rated to maintain data integrity for at least 200 years. Firmware is stored in newly-enhanced flash memory with error correction code technology. And, as with our past controllers, constant power is not needed to maintain saved data, meaning power loss doesn't erase your settings and your battery won't be drained during long periods of storage.

Further PCB Improvements Include...

  • Elimination of configuration jumpers. Now, functions that previously required a jumper change are changed automatically in software for easy setup.

  • New outputs have been added which can be customized by the end user.

  • Elimination of the external capacitor needed for the speedometer signal output.

  • Improved engine RPM signal input which improves compatibility with different engine RPM signals, such as direct ignition coil connections in HEI, TFI, and breaker point ignition systems.

Tips for Lightning and Other Truck Owners

E4od

The E4OD four speed automatic transmission is used in F and E seriestrucks, as well as AOD and AOD-E/4R70W four speed automatic transmissions. To determine which is used in your vehicle, follow these guidelines:

  • If the shifter has a P-R-N-OD-D-1 pattern, the transmission must be anAOD (applicable to 1980-1993 vehicles).
  • If a 1989-1993 truck has an Overdrive Cancel Switch and a P-R-N-OD-2-1shifter pattern, then it is equipped with an E4OD transmission. With thepossible exception of some 4R70W equipped 1993 E-150 vans with 5.0L SFIengines (The existence of a 1993 4R70W van is unsubstantiated).
  • 1994 and later vehicles with four speed automatic transmissions will allhave an Overdrive Cancel Switch and a P-R-N-OD-2-1 shifter pattern, butmay have either an E4OD or a 4R70W transmission. All 4.2L, 4.6L, and some5.0L engines use the 4R70W transmission, while diesel, 4.9L, 5.4L, 5.8L,6.8L, and 7.5L vehicles always use E4OD's. You can measure the transmissionfluid pan to determine which transmission you have if identification informationis not available. A 4R70W transmission pan has an overall length of justunder 15 inches, while an E4OD pan is much larger, measuring about 20 inchesin overall length.

E4od Parts

The E4OD has seen many changes and updates since its introduction in 1989,but most later transmissions will prove reliable with nothing more thanour ReCal-Pro E4OD valve body recalibration kit and a 'low pressure drop'auxiliary oil cooler (an OEM auxiliary cooler, if installed, is usuallyadequate). Baumann Electronic Controls supports the E4OD with the US Shift electronic transmission control system (which provides completecontrol of all transmission shift points as well as torque converter clutchoperation and part-throttle shift firmness). We can alsoprovide custom-built torque converters for the E4OD transmission as mentionedin the 'Torque Converter Upgrades' section ofthis guide.

E4od Transmission

If it becomes necessary to overhaul your E4OD transmission, you shouldperform as many updates as possible if it is a pre-1995 unit. E4OD componentupdates include, as an example, the following items:

E4od Shift Kit

  • Improved (thicker) converter clutch piston (circa 1994), prevents the formationof cracks which relieve fluid pressure from the apply side of the clutch, causing it to slip and even bluing the outside surface of the torque converterin extreme cases. Ensure that your new converter contains an updated OEMor 'LuK' brand heavy-duty clutch. This can be difficult, as many torqueconverter suppliers and remanufacturers may not use this new style of clutch.
  • Higher displacement front pump (for 1995) provides more fluid capacityfor faster engagement of reverse and greater lube flow.
  • New (for 1994) 4-pinion overdrive planet and input shaft assemblies replaceolder 3 and 4 pinion units which tend to develop cracks in the carrierunder heavy loads.
  • Center support update kit (for units built from 1989 through part of 1994)replaces wear-prone bushing with a ball bearing and contains a new overdrivestub shaft.
  • Stronger overdrive clutch cylinder snap ring which will not dislodge.
  • Revised sun gear and rear case bushings (circa 1992 model year) providelonger wear life and better lubrication.
  • 4 pinion planet carriers (first used in 1992 model year)
  • New forward clutch friction plates with hardened internal splines cure'chatter' and 'no-drive' conditions in E4OD and some later C-6 transmissions.
